Chevrolet Equinox EV vs Tesla Model Y for Colorado Drivers
Tesla Model Y
How Does the New Chevy Equinox electric vehicle (EV) Compare to the Tesla Model Y
There was a time when Tesla was the only name in the all-electric vehicle game. Over time, however, other brands have established their own impressive EV models. Case in point? Chevrolet.
When you visit the sales team at Bozarth Chevrolet, located in Lone Tree, CO, you'll find our team waiting with new models like the Chevy Equinox EV. This top-tier SUV provides a wealth of benefits and can easily stand toe-to-toe with vehicles like the Tesla Model Y. Let's take a closer look at both and discuss why the Chevy Equinox EV is the better option for Denver-Metro area drivers.
Performance
Drivers interested in the Chevy Equinox EV will find both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive options available. With rear-wheel drive models, you can expect an output of around 220 horsepower. That's more than enough to get a compact like the Equinox EV moving. Centennial and Englewood drivers looking for more will find the all-wheel drive model ready to dish out 300 horsepower.
The Tesla Model Y, to its credit, is more powerful. While there aren't firm figures available for its rear-wheel-drive model, the all-wheel-drive Tesla Model Y can produce up to 395 horsepower.
EV Range
Long-range driving has often been the selling point of Tesla's all-electric lineup. The rear-wheel drive version of the Tesla Model Y, for instance, can drive up to 321 miles, for instance.
As impressive as that might be, the Chevy Equinox EV isn't far off. New rear-wheel-drive models have a fully charged driving range of 319 miles. Investing in the all-wheel-drive version will see that drop down to 307 miles of range. That being said, that's better than the Tesla Model Y, which offers a base 240-mile range in all-wheel drive models. The Tesla Model Y does offer a longer-range all-wheel-drive model, but it only gets you up to 270 miles of range.
Interior & Comfort
Chevrolet makes comfortable SUVs. They've been doing it for a long time, and that experience and pedigree are on full display in the Chevy Equinox EV. New models can seat up to five, with plenty of legroom and headroom to spare. You'll also enjoy up to 26.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats.
The Tesla Model Y is a five-seater in its base form, but can be upgraded to seven seats with an extra fee. Doing that, however, will eat into its cargo space, which is barely on par with the Chevy Equinox EV. Both models offer a solid spread of interior upholstery options and amenities for Denver-area drivers.
Features & Technology
The Chevy Equinox EV hits the road with a robust 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, providing easy access to media apps like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and more. The Tesla Model Y only offers a 15.4-inch touchscreen, which it relies on for almost every interior function of the vehicle. While the Equinox EV has definitely embraced digital control, it still recognizes the wisdom and convenience of physical buttons and tactile controls.
While we're sure there are some who prefer the Tesla approach, we think Chevrolet's mixture of touchscreen and button controls is more appealing.
Pricing
Chevrolet has built its business on selling value-driven, attractive, and well-equipped models at a fair price. The Chevy Equinox EV is no exception. The starting price for the Chevy Equinox EV is $36,795. That's a very reasonable price for a well-equipped all-electric SUV. That's especially true when you compare it to the Tesla Model Y, which starts at $41,630.
The Tesla Model Y is a great SUV, and we've already seen that it can hit peaks of performance beyond the abilities of the Chevy Equinox EV. At the same time, the Equinox EV can offer better or comparable driving range, offers superior features, and costs around $5,000 less. That's a pretty big benefit, as far as we're concerned.
